Dedication
African Diaspora World Tourism Awards respectfully dedicates its inaugural ceremony to the legendary late, great Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr. (August 17, 1887 - June 10,1940). The Jamaican-born Garvey
was a publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, orator and a proponent of
Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism. Founder of Universal Negro
Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL), part
of his organization's purpose was to:"...unify the world's people of African ancestry into one great body."
To encourage self-reliance, he founded the Negro Factories Corporation,
which managed a chain of businesses that included restaurants, a hotel
and the noted Black Star Line Steamship Corporation.
Garvey's Pan-African philosophy inspired a global mass
movement and economic empowerment focusing on Africa known as Garveyism,
which eventually inspired other movements such as the Civil Rights
Movement and Rastafarian. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that
Garvey was the first man of color to lead and develop a mass movement to
give millions of Negroes a sense of dignity and destiny. Allied groups
inspired by Garveyism have included the Nation of Islam, the World
African Diaspora Union and other African and Pan-African organizations.
Today Garvey is an inspiration for a modern Black Cultural Heritage
Movement. In appreciation of his work towards "uplifting his mighty
race," African Diaspora World Tourism Awards salutes and pays tribute to the honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr.
