Angelica Hairston: 'Classical music protégés present a free concert on December 30th in tribute to Azira and Jesse Hill'

Classical harpist and violinist Angelica Hairston writes:

An extraordinary group of 15 graduates of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Talent Development Program (TDP) will host a recital on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at 7 p.m. at Fifield Hall in the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, 1328 Peachtree Street NE (beside the High Museum). The group includes students and graduates of Juilliard, Peabody Conservatory of Music, Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto), Curtis Institute of Music, Rice University, and New England Conservatory, as well as a member of the South Carolina Philharmonic. The TDP gives young African American and Latino students (grades 4-12) the wonderful opportunity to study with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians and to attend prestigious summer music programs to study with some of the world’s best instructors.

The recital is dedicated to Mrs. Azira Hill, a founding member of the TDP, and to the memory of her husband Mr. Jesse Hill, former CEO of Atlanta Life Insurance Company. The TDP graduates have greatly benefited from the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Hill through a scholarship named in honor of Mrs. Azira Hill. Her hope for the program is that more minority classical musicians will get the opportunity to join the ranks of professional orchestras across the country and the world. The recital on December 30th will include a flute quartet, clarinet quintet, harp duet, and string ensemble of works by Mozart, Brahms, Debussy, Lizotte, and Villa Lobos.

While admission is free, donations to the Azira G. Hill Scholarship Fund will be greatly appreciated. This event is presented by TDP Alumni and Volunteers and is open to everyone.
