Soprano Othalie Graham to debut as soloist with two major American orchestras
Canadian
American soprano Othalie Graham will make symphonic debuts as soloist
with the Philadelphia Orchestra on June 27 in the Beethoven Ninth and
the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on October 11 in the Defiant Requiem,
conceived by Murray Sidlin.

Canadian soprano's timbre and power were thrilling - steely ring from
top to bottom - and her path from imperiousness to passion was
convincing." said The Boston Globe of her 2009 performance of Puccini's Turandot."
Ms. Graham
will make her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra on June 27, 2012 at 8
p.m. in the Beethoven Ninth Symphony conducted by Xian Xhang, who is
also making her debut with the orchestra in this performance. The other
vocal soloists for the performance are also from her alma mater, The
Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA).

Of her
recent performance at The Kennedy Center, the D. C. Performing Arts
Examiner noted, "Soprano Othalie Graham evoked a state of profound
contemplation over the audience with the elegaic 'Liebestod' from
Tristan und Isolde[...]Graham was able to fully connect to the music in
the context of the opera, with conductor Julian Wachner and the
orchestra magically creating the scene. Ending with her eyes transfixed
into the vastness of the hall, the transcendental moment was accorded
with ecstatic applause."
Ms. Graham a
few months ago made her debut as Mimmie in "La fanciulla del West" by
Puccini. "Graham’s exquisite artistry goes beyond her vocal prowess to
include consummate acting skills. Whether poignantly telling us about
Minnie’s “$30 worth” of education, playing a game of poker to save the
man she loves or later pleading for his life before a lynch mob, Graham
masterfully reveals the strength, tenderness and ultimate integrity of

Later this
fall, Ms. Graham will make her widely anticipated debut with the Atlanta
Symphony Orchestra with guest conductor, Maestro Murray Sidlin on
October 11, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. Conceived by Sidlin, the "Defiant
Requiem" is a performance of Verdi's beloved work that serves as an
homage to the performances that were given in Terezin concentration
camp. The performance will be a multi-media presentation with
testimonies from surviving members of the choir. Joining Graham will be
her esteemed colleagues, mezzo-soprano Susana Poretsky, tenor Mark
Panuccio and bass Alfred Walker.
