CHAPEL HILL- This week and next Monday, local residents will have an opportunity to see the UNC Opera in action. UNC Music Department Chair Terri Rhodes says the group will be performing two very different one-act shows.

“The first is entitled ‘Dreamlovers,’ by Samuel Coleridge Taylor,’” she says. “That one has an operetta-esque feel. It’s bigger than life with extremely fantastical characters. The second show is called ‘Highway One USA’ by William Grant [Still], and it tells a story of a family that owns a gas station somewhere in the USA.”

During a dress rehearsal on Tuesday, senior Dan Silva and freshman Kayla Hill provided a sample of what audiences can expect. In addition to a pair of performances at UNC’s Hill Hall, the opera will also hold a performance at the Chapel Hill Public Library.

The two performances in Hill Hall will take place 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday and 8 p.m. on Friday. The third performance will take place on Monday at 7 p.m. on the stage outside the Chapel Hill Public Library’s temporary home at University Mall. All three performances are free and open to the public.
