“The U.S. Civil War began 151 years ago today with the bombardment of Fort Sumter off the South Carolina coast. As we honor the memory of the more than 600,000 Americans who gave their lives during that great conflict we call on Congress to protect the hallowed ground where they fought, as well as other sites that contribute to our understanding of this war.”

“While many of the war's significant sites are protected within the National Park System, some key related sites remain unprotected. Legislation currently in Congress would protect critical land at Gettysburg, Petersburg, and Vicksburg not currently within park boundaries, and would establish new sites to honor the legacy of Harriet Tubman and the Battle of Mill Springs, Kentucky.”
