“The Los Angeles Philharmonic free neighborhood concert at California African American Museum on March 16, 2012 enjoyed an overflow crowd only a short distance from a Laker sell out at the Staple Center. The single piece program was Tckaikovsky Symphony No.5 in E minor. The orchestra included African Americans Dale Breidenthal (second violin), Frederick Tinsley (Bass), and John Lofton (Bass Trombone).

“If any attendees were unfamilar with Tchaikovsky, they left the performance with a name to remember. The surprise for me was the picturesque and demanding conducting of Courtney Lewis. The audience was diverse and half or more African American. 

"The great composers, like Tchaikovky, in the workhorse category are undeniable masters. Nevertheless, LA Phil administrators should recognize that other influences exist and should be included in outreach to an increasingly diverse Los Angeles. Outreach programs are educational vehicles. Excellent composers of any/all ethnicities should be reflected in these educational vehicles.”
