Two prominent
Chicago musical institutions — the Chicago Jazz Ensemble and the
Center for Black Music Research — should be shut down, according to
a preliminary recommendation from the Office of the Provost/Academic
Affairs at Columbia College Chicago, where the organizations are
based.
"In this time of declining enrollments and
increasing student debt, Columbia is realigning its resources to
focus on support for student learning and persistence to graduation,"
reads the school's internal document, "Blueprint:
Prioritization," which was obtained by the Tribune.
"To
do this, the College must prioritize its available funds in new ways.
Regrettably, this necessitates the elimination of financial support
for several worthy organizations that have been a source of
institutional pride for Columbia."
The report was
distributed to the Chicago Jazz Ensemble Board of Governors last
Tuesday. The executive directors of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble and the
Center for Black Music Research acknowledged receiving the report but
declined to comment on it.
“We're just in the process (of
weighing options) right now,” said Richard Dunscomb, chairman of
Columbia's music department.
A "listening forum" for
response to the recommendations will be held at Columbia Monday.
Final provost recommendations will be posted March 12. An academic
committee will complete recommendations March 15. These
recommendations will be presented to Columbia College president
Warrick Carter, with a final decision expected to be announced in
June.
RECOGNIZING THE ECONOMIC DISASTER THAT HAS BEEN CONCEIVED AND PERPETRATED BY THOSE WHO CONTROL THE SOCIETY, IT IS FOR THOSE WHO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF SUCH A LOSS--WITH ALL OTHERS--TO DO WHAT IS NECESSARY TO PRESERVE THESE TREASURES. EVEN IF WE MUST BURY THE COLLECTION IN THE DESERT--AS WAS DONE WITH THE NAG HAMADI AND DARK AGES SCRIPTURES-- A WAY MUST BE FOUND. DESECRATION ON THE ALTAR OF MONEY IS EVIL AND CRIMINAL.
