“MUSIC: Daughter of Famous African American Composer to
Host Lecture/Recital Feb. 17
Judith
Anne Still, daughter of African American composer William Grant Still
(1895-1978), will present a lecture on her father's life and career
on Friday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. in Room 100 of the Foster Music
Building. William Grant Still was the first African American composer
to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra, the first
to conduct a major American orchestra, and the first to have an opera
broadcast on the radio. The event will feature the lecture and
performances of several of Still's works by EKU music faculty and
students. The public is invited to attend this free event.

Biography
Richard
Crosby was born in Ashland, OH, and raised in Largo, FL. He holds the
Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education, the Master of Music
degree in Piano Performance and Wind Conducting, and the Doctor of
Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance, all from the University of
Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He has been at Eastern
Kentucky University since 1986 where he teaches piano and music
history. He has released a CD through Capstone Records entitled An
American Portrait,
containing works by Charles Griffes, Amy Beach, William Grant Still,
Lee Hoiby, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, David Guion, and George Gershwin.
