Pianist Kimberly
Cann will perform in a free concert at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18
in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. The concert will feature
works by Debussy, Liszt, Beethoven and the 20th Century composer
Margaret Bonds, one of the first black classical performers and
composers to gain recognition in the U.S.
Cann, who now lives
in Western North Carolina and keeps a busy teaching and performing
schedule, has a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music.
She won her first national piano competition at the age of 18 and has
performed as a soloist with many orchestras. A native of the West
Indies who moved to Fletcher as a girl, Cann returned to the islands
as an adult to serve as Visiting Professor of Music and
Artist-in-Residence at the Northern Caribbean University in Jamaica.
Now back in the Asheville area, she is active in the music community,
serving as the Vice President of the Asheville Area Piano Forum, as a
member of the WCQS Community Advisory Board, and on the Board of
Directors of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra.
