“Aaron Dworkin, founder and president of the Detroit-based Sphinx Organization that promotes minorities in classical music, was confirmed Tuesday by the U.S. Senate to serve a six-year term on the National Council on the Arts. Dworkin, 40, who was nominated for the post in late 2010 by President Barack Obama, started the Sphinx Organization on a shoestring in 1996. It has since grown into a major success story, addressing historical inequities by significantly increasing the pool and visibility of minority classical musicians.
“Dworkin, a graduate of the University of Michigan, has been widely honored for his work with Sphinx, including receiving a prestigious and lucrative $500,000 MacArthur Fellowship in 2005. 'I am deeply honored that I was considered and selected by the President and confirmed by the Senate,' Dworkin said Wednesday. 'It is my hope that I can play a role in advocating for the arts in our society and access for all young people.' [Aaron P.
