Pianist Leslie Amper's '1934' concert to bring music of the Great Depression to OKC Museum of Art

Acclaimed pianist Leslie Amper will perform “1934 in Concert: Composers of the Federal Music Project” Wednesday in conjunction with the exhibit “1934: A New Deal for Artists” at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.
“Her concert will feature works by several American composers who worked in Federal Music Project, including William Grant Still, Amy Beach, Henry Cowell, Ernest Bloch, Roger Sessions and Ruth Crawford.
“They call this the Golden Age of American Music because this is when American composers started to find their American voice, and they weren’t imitating Europe so much anymore,” Amper said. “A lot of that was spawned also by this French teacher Nadia Boulanger … who was encouraging them to write American music and then they were here beginning to find their own sound.”
