On May 7, 2011 at 8pm at Merkin Concert Hall, Ensemble du Monde mourn the death of Eino Tamberg, Estonia’s greatest composer, former living composer. It was the ensemble’s plan to have the composer come to New York City for the performance of his award-winning work the Concerto grosso, Op. 5.

The concert led by music director and conductor Marlon Daniel is highlighted by works inspired by dance rhythms by Josef Suk, Astor Piazzolla and of course Eino Tamberg. Featured performers are violin virtuoso and concert master of the Orlando and Charleston Symphony orchestras Yuriy Bekker and trumpeter Aaron Flagg, Dean of The Hartt School.

Ensemble du Monde
“Led by its music director and conductor, Marlon Daniel, the ensemble performs music from the baroque era to the avant-garde in addition to the standard Classical repertoire. It frequently plays overlooked masterpieces and world premières. Programs are usually thematic in nature and based on the concept of presenting a variety of great music not limited by cultural, musical or stylistic boundaries. To encompass this vast repertoire the orchestra expands and contracts, which allows the group maximum flexibility to perform as a small chamber group or a full-scale symphony orchestra.”

MARLON DANIEL
“One of the most exciting conductors of his generation, conductor Marlon Daniel has been described as 'a natural and enormous talent' (Chicago Sun-Times) and his artistry has been hailed as 'fabulous and exceptional' (Pravda – Moscow). The winner of the 2009 John and Mary Virginia Foncannon Conducting Award, he has performed in some of the most prestigious venues in Europe and the United States that range from Carnegie Hall to the Rudolfinum in Prague and several international music festivals. He has also appeared alongside several internationally renowned artists that have included Deborah Voigt, Julian Milkis, Kalin Ivanov, Koh Gabriel Kameda and Magali Léger to name a few.”

Yuriy Bekker, violin
“A native of Minsk, Belarus, violinist Yuriy Bekker is Concertmaster of the Charleston Symphony, the Orlando Philharmonic, the AIMS Festival in Graz, Austria and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, where his solo appearances have created a sensation.”

Aaron Flagg, trumpet
“Aaron Flagg has given master classes and recitals at Jackson State University and Fayetteville State University, and given lectures at the Curtis Institute, Oberlin College, and Carnegie Hall. His jazz performances include the Illinois Jacquet Big Band, the Music Outreach Jazz Ensemble, and the Aaron Flagg Quartet. He has toured with the Tania Leon's Son Sonora Ensemble; recorded with Roberta Flack and operatic soprano Barbara Conrad; and performed with the New York Philharmonic, Manhattan Virtuosi, Lansing Symphony, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Wynton Marsalis, Gladys Knight, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, among others.” [Tania León (b. 1943) is an Afro-Cuban Composer and Conductor whose website is http://www.tanialeon.com/; she is also profiled at AfriClassical.com]
