“Leo Brouwer, born Juan Leovigildo Brouwer Mezquida (born March 1, 1939) in Havana, is a Cuban composer, conductor and guitarist. The San Antonio Symphony will perform his Concerto Elegiaco for Guitar and Orchestra on February 11 and 12. Guitarist Ricardo Cobo will be the soloist. The Symphony program notes describes Brouwer’s career:
“Cuban composer and guitarist Leo Brouwer is probably the most important composer in the classical tradition to come from the Caribbean, especially as related to the world of classical guitar. His introduction to music study began in his early teens when he first played the guitar, an instrument he would soon study with the legendary composer and arranger Emilo Pujol. Within five years, Brouwer gave his debut as a performer and soon thereafter gained notoriety as a composer. In 1959 he came to the United States to study guitar at the University of Hartford’s Hartt College and composition at The Juilliard School under Vincent Persichetti. This is the only formal training Brouwer received as a composer.
“His compositional output includes pieces for chamber ensembles, choirs, wind band, and orchestra.
