[Maestro James DePreist conducts at Juilliard]

“James DePreist, Artistic Advisor and mover and shaker behind Pasadena Symphony’s recent changes has relinquished his post as director of conducting and orchestral studies at the Julliard School of Music in New York to 43 year-old Alan Gilbert, the music director of the New York Philharmonic. According to a story in today’s New York Times. DePreist, 74, who assumed the position in 2004 at Julliard, will continue to work as principal conductor and director emeritus.”
“DePreist came to Pasadena in June of 2010 to help artistically guide the Pasadena Symphony as changes were occurring.” “Currently the orchestra’s conductors have been selected by DePreist from his roll-a-dex of young conductors he has affiliated with. The naming of Marvin Hamlisch to the Pasadena Pops as principal conductor of that program is seen as a move influenced by DePreist.
