Cello & Bass Works of Arthur Cunningham, Gary Powell Nash & Fred Onovwerosuoke

[The Piano Music of Arthur Cunningham; John Ellis, piano Equilibrium 65 (2004)]

On August 8, 2010 AfriClassical posted: “Researching Sheet Music for Cello and Bass by Composers of African Descent.” We quoted an entry in the Guest Book at AfriClassical.com, in which Dr. Kenneth Slavett of Hampton University wrote: “I am the cello and bass instructor at Hampton University in Virginia. I am interested in finding material written for cello or bass to be performed by my students.”

AfriClassical responded with a few examples found in the Works Lists compiled by Prof. Dominique-René de Lerma of Lawrence University Conservatory, and in the online sheet music catalog of William Grant Still Music, http://www.williamgrantstill.com So many useful comments have been submitted by email that we have compiled them into a post of their own.

Dr. Fred Onovwerosuoke, African Musical Arts, Inc.
My Fantasia for Cello and Piano is an earlier work, but which your inquirer might find interesting. He should look up our listing at http://africarts.org/AMP/

Dr. Timothy W. Holley, North Carolina Central University
I have some information for Dr. Slavett that I can forward to him on cello music of black composers...TWH

Michael S. Wright, ISAAM
“Blues Impromptu for Solo Cello” by Gary Powell Nash on a CD “Music from Mt. San Angelo,” produced by the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts is an absolutely splendid work. I believe that Tunde Jegede wrote some very good music with ‘cello for Yo Yo Ma some years back. Regards, Mike

Dr. Dominique-René de Lerma, Lawrence University Conservatory
(Prof. De Lerma refers to the Arthur Cunningham Works List he compiled, which is featured at AfriClassical.com) He has several works for cello and double bass.
