Letters of a Love Betrayed
Published Tuesday 6 October 2009 at 10:20 by Edward Bhesania
“Composed by Eleanor Alberga to a libretto by Donald Sturrock, Letters of a Love Betrayed is based on a tale from Isabel Allende’s The Stories of Eva Luna, in which a young orphaned South American heiress, Analia, is seduced into marriage by the dreamy letters of her cousin Luis. Luis soon loses interest in his wife - unsurprisingly, as it was his father Eugenio who had put him up to winning Analia’s affections in order to acquire her inherited land.”

“In the remote foothills of the Andes, a young woman is seduced by a series of magical love letters...”
“Well Eleanor, first of all, thank you very much for writing this opera!...What was it that in the first place drew you to this story?
I think it was the central character. It was Analia, and her world. She has that vivid imagination...She has that strength and honesty and forthrightness; she's not afraid. But she also has that inner world, that imagination, that spirituality about her that I just found an amazing mixture of traits. [Eleanor Alberga is profiled at AfriClassical.com]
