Afro-Cuban Composer Leo Brouwer Receives Cuba's National Film Award for 2009

Leo Brouwer is an Afro-Cuban guitarist, composer, arranger and conductor who is profiled at AfriClassical.com. He has been a subject of many posts on this blog. On May 24, 2009 AfriClassical posted: “Leo Brouwer's Version of Beatles Tune 'Penny Lane' Opens Cubadisco Guitar Fiesta May 21.” We quoted Irina Echarry of HavanaTimes.org: “He is, in essence, a guide of the Cuban and universal guitar, and the winner of this year’s National Cinema Prize for his soundtracks.” Several news sources in Spanish, including http://spanish.china.org.cn, have published a story which indicates that Leo Brouwer will receive the National Film Award today, July 21, 2009, from the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC). The ceremony will be held at the Chaplin Hall of Havana. Among the scores which earned Brouwer the award are “Lucia”, “Death of a Bureaucrat” and “Memories of underdevelopment.”
