Dr. Rae Linda Brown, Biographer of Florence Price, Has Published Her Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3

[Musicologist Rae Linda Brown, Vice President of Undergraduate Education and Professor of Music, Loyola Marymount University]

This morning, AfriClassical posted Florence Price: 'First Black Woman to be Recognized as a Symphonic Composer'”.  This afternoon, Lea made this comment: “Where would her music be available for rental? I'm assuming it's not available to buy.” Sheet music for several works of Florence Price can be found via Internet searches. Examples of sources are: http://www.SheetMusicPlus.com and http://www.OrganMusicOnly.com This issue was addressed in an AfriClassical post on January 4, 2009: A-R Editions Publishes Florence Price's Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3, Edited by Rae Linda Brown”. An earlier post anticipating publication was made on July 14, 2008, before Dr. Brown changed schools: “Rae Linda Brown, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Music (Musicology) and Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department of Music, University of Southern California Irvine: 'Rae Linda Brown research has focused on American music. She has completed a biography of composer Florence B. Price, The Heart of a Woman: The Life and Music of Florence B. Price (forthcoming University of Illinois Press) and has edited many of Price's scores for performance.'” [Dr. Dominique-RenĂ© de Lerma, Professor of Music at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, has compiled a Works List of the compositions of Florence B. Price. It appears on the Florence Price page at AfriClassical.com]

  2. Dear Dr Rae Linda Brown,

I'd really love to read a copy of your Florence Price biography. We recently included Florence's story and some of her music at a show in the Royal Festival Hall in London and we're looking at doing a follow-up show next year. Would you be able to send me a copy or tell me where I can buy one from? Would be fantastic to be in touch with you as well as a research resource. Many thanks
