Chamber Music Charleston on Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's 'Five Negro Melodies for Piano Trio'

[Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Chamber Music: Fantasiestucke for String Quartet, Op. 5 (20:55); Five Negro Melodies for Piano Trio (18:10); Nonet in F Minor (26:40); Coleridge Ensemble; AFKA SK 543 (1998)

On Friday, October 31, 2008 AfriClassical posted: “Chamber Music Charleston Performs Piano Trio of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Nov. 2”. Later that day, we received a comment by JW, “This work is properly called Five Negro Melodies for Piano Trio, and is C-T's arrangement for piano, violin and cello of five movements from his historic collection 24 Negro Melodies for Piano.” A second comment was made on Nov. 1, 2008 by Sandra Nikolajevs:I [am] actually the director of Chamber Music Charleston, and we are performing Coleridge-Taylor’s Piano Trio tomorrow (and Monday and Tuesday for sold out audiences). Thank you very much for correcting me about the mis-title! I am embarrassed that it happened – for some reason I had earlier notes that simply listed the work as Piano Trio Op. 59, No. 1. I will make the correction when I make pre-concert announcements. I must say that I absolutely love this work and wish there was an edition for purchase (does anyone know if an edition exists?), as I think it is just a wonderful piece and the audience always loves it”.  [The Afro-British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) is profiled at AfriClassical.com]
