AfriClassical learned of André Bangambula Vindu from Mike S. Wright, Chair, International Society for African to American Music. He says of Vindu: “I believe him to be in the top rank of African composers.”

“André Bangambula Vindu (b. October 1, 1953, Kinshasa, Congo [Kinshasa]). Congolese composer, now resident in China, of mostly orchestral, chamber and piano works that have been performed in Africa, the Americas and Asia.
“Mr. Vindu studied harmony with Mario Gaolé, orchestration with Jean-Alcide Pierre Cellier, saxophone with Vincent Gérard and Mitzo Mitzov, and solfège with Dols Lambert and Lucy Mansicidor at the Conservatoire de Musique et d'Art Dramatique in Kinshasa from 1969-73. He also studied at the Institut National des Arts of the Université Nationale du Zaïre in Kinshasa from 1973-76. He then studied in China, initially Chinese at the Beijing Languages Institute in 1984-85, and later composition with Wang Qiang and Zhao Xiao-sheng, fugue with Chen Ming-zhi and polyphony with Lin Hua at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music from 1985-91, where he earned his BA and MA. He also had post-graduate studies at the conservatory in 1994-95.”
Vindu's Lullaby has been published by Oxford University Press in Vol. 1 of Piano Music of Africa and the African Diaspora, compiled and edited by Dr. William H. Chapman Nyaho. The work has received this review in Piano Pedagogy Plus on Feb. 28, 2008: "Lullaby, by Bangambula Vindu. Beautiful, hypnotic left-hand accompaniment juxtaposed against a counter-rhythmic, counter-melodic right-hand melody. The parts are exchanged halfway through the piece, and then return to the original setting for the ending.” Orchestral works include Ballade and Symphonic Poem. Vindu has also composed Rêverie for piano, and has arranged Congo Folksongs, Nos. 1 and 2.
