May 4, 2017Charleston SCThe Charleston Gospel Choir is pleased to present Women: Honoring Global Sisterhood, Saturday, May 27 at Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street, Charleston, 5:00 p.m. under the musical direction of David A. Richardson with guest conductor Vivian E. Jones as part of the 2017 Piccolo Spoleto Festival.

Through song and narration, the performance showcases the historical struggles of African-American women here in the U.S. and around the globe. Paying homage to the achievements of these women, the Choir will celebrate the struggles and triumphs of our mothers, sisters, aunts, and family of women.

The internationally acclaimed Choir will perform moving gospel and spiritual standards by gospel greats including Walter Hawkins’ He's That Kind of Friend, Hezekiah Walker’s Grateful, Richard Smallwood’s Trust Me, and many others with lyrics that honor our sisters-at-large for their integrity here and around the globe.

Charleston Gospel Choir Founding Director Vivian E. Jones, who directed the Choir for seven years, will return as guest conductor. A retired choral educator, Ms. Jones completed her teaching career at Summerville High School, but was most noted for her tenure at Burk High School and the Burk Blue Notes.

“Vivian is a choral jewel, highly respected among her peers throughout the region and across the country. I am honored to have her join me and the Choir she gave its musical roots,” said David A. Richardson, Choir Music Director.

“Women have always provided our communities with stability, but most importantly have given us our future, through birth and nurturing and raising of children. Conceiving and producing a performance in their honor is one of the highlights of my shared 17-year experience with the Choir,” said Lee Pringle, Choir President and event producer.
