Music and Stage Director Leslie B. Dunner: The South Shore Opera Company of Chicago's production of Verdi's "La Traviata" gives us both history and fantasy

Leslie B. Dunner, Music and Stage Director for "La Traviata", South Shore Opera Company of Chicago:

Set at the South Shore Country Club in Chicago, the South Shore Opera Company of Chicago's production of Verdi's "La Traviata" gives us both history and fantasy. The history of bi-racial French Author Alexander Dumas and his affair with Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis gave inspiration to the concept of imagining what the Black elite of Chicago's South Side would have been like had its neighborhood's "Country Club" not been exclusive (closed to Blacks) until 1974. The company's production concept is modest in execution, but strong in message: situations are timeless and can be translated to modern times and scenarios, given a little bit of imagination, wit, charm, and artistry.
