[Eight Visions - A New Anthology For Flute And Piano; Naxos 8.559629 (2009)]

The website of the Afro-Cuban composer and conductor Tania León (b.1943) is http://www.tanialeon.com/; she is also profiled at AfriClassical.com. Tania Justina León seems to be constantly in the news, for her compositions as well as for performances and recordings of her many works. On May 13, 2010 AfriClassical posted: “Tania León, Afro-Cuban Composer and Conductor Born May 14, 1943, Has New CDs.” One of the new discs was Eight Visions - A New Anthology For Flute And Piano; Naxos 8.559629 (2009). It includes Alma by Tania León.
ArkivMusic.com quotes Carla Rees of MusicWeb International, who writes:
“Tania León’s Alma (meaning soul or spirit in Spanish) is an enjoyable piece in a contemporary style which has elements of dancing rhythms, playfulness and dialogue. Describing air moving through wind chimes, the piece gathers a wonderfully elegant momentum with appealing interruptions of flow in the effective rhythmic writing. Elements of jazz also permeate the piece, providing a sense of enjoyable earthiness to the harmonic language.”

"Tania Leon Alma, What to Listen For” (4:29) is a YouTube video posted Jan. 7, 2012 by careergirls. It is a delightful explanation of the piece Alma from the perspective of the composer, in her own words:
