“Thomas Flippin is a versatile American classical guitarist, published composer, and acclaimed educator. He has performed across genres with several of the leading figures of today’s American Chamber Music, Jazz, and New Music scenes. He has shared the stage with such talents as Eighth Blackbird’s Lisa Kaplan, soprano Alicia Hall Moran and jazz pianist Jason Moran, and the Juilliard composer collective Blind Ear Music. And he has been featured in notable venues like the 92nd Street Y, Le Poisson Rouge, the Norfolk Music Festival, The Kitchen, The Aspen Music Festival, and the Yale Guitar Extravaganza.

“Flippin graduated with honors from the University of Chicago with undergraduate degrees in Law and Music while studying with renowned guitarists Denis Azabagic and Dr. Julie Goldberg. He then received two graduate degrees from the Yale School of Music with the revered guitarist/composer Benjamin Verdery on a full scholarship. In 2008, Flippin’s guitar duo, Duo Noire, was awarded one of the first Alumni Ventures grants from Yale to perform and lecture to over 2,500 students throughout New England.

“Flippin has performed for and studied with several of the most distinguished classical guitarists and composers in the world, including: Sharon Isbin, Manuel Barrueco, and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, and composers Martin Bresnick, Ingram Marshall, and John Anthony Lennon. He has also won top prizes in several competitions including: The Olga and Paul Menn Composition Prize, the National Federation of Music Clubs, and the East Carolina University Classical Guitar competition.
